Music is central to life at St Mary Magdalene. It plays an important role in our Sunday services and helps us to worship.
Director of Music
ALEXANDER KNIGHT BA (Cantab) ARCO
Alexander grew up in Manchester and spent his early musical years as a pianist, quickly obtaining Distinction in ABRSM Grade 8 at the age of 9. He attended The Manchester Grammar School and began studying organ with Simon Leach, before taking a short break from education to work. Alexander subsequently moved to Cardiff and held the post of Director of Music & Organist at St Mary’s, Whitchurch, whilst under the tuition of David Thomas.
Between 2012 and 2015, Alexander held the Organ Scholarship at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where he also read for a degree in music. With Queens’ College Choir, Alexander toured and performed in Hong Kong, Paris, Budapest and Switzerland, and featured on the CD ‘For The Wings of a Dove’. Alexander studied organ with William Whitehead whilst at Cambridge, and performed in solo recitals across Cambridge, Cardiff and at Kensington Palace. After graduating, Alexander moved to London and now holds the post of Director of Music & Organist at St Mary Magdalene, Richmond.
Alexander began DJ-ing, writing and producing music, and radio presenting whilst at Cambridge, and is continuing to pursue a career in the music industry whilst holding his post in Richmond. Alexander also teaches music, piano and maths privately, and in his spare time plays football and is an avid Manchester City fan.
St Mary Magdalene has a voluntary robed adult choir which leads worship on Sundays and at major festivals. On Sundays, the choir sings at the 9:30am Parish Eucharist and for Evensong at 6:30pm. The choir also joins those of the other churches in the Richmond Team Ministry, St Matthias and St John the Divine, at the various Team Services which take place throughout the year.
Currently, the choir rehearses each week on Thursdays at 7:30pm and on Sundays before each service, although there are occasionally extra rehearsals at important times of the church year.
For more information about the choir please see our website: www.stmarymagdalenechoir.co.uk
Singing with the Choir
We are always looking to welcome more people to join our current regular, committed and friendly core of choir members in making music. As a voluntary choir, it is recognised that different people can commit to varying degrees; if you are interested in singing with the choir, please e-mail the Director of Music (firstname.lastname@example.org) who would be glad to hear from you. All voice parts are welcome.
Monthly music lists will be published and downloadable here:
