Remembering Captain Tom

Although our bells remain silent for group ringing, we took part in the national tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore who died earlier this month at the age of 100. To mark his funeral on Saturday February 27, churches around the country were encouraged to toll a bell to give thanks for his life and also pray for all those working in the NHS for whom Captain Tom raised £32.7m, an amazing amount of money.

Martin Crick, master of the Richmond ringers, rang the tenor bell in memory of Captain Tom who made international news during the pandemic when he walked round his garden 100 times to raise money for the NHS.

Martin said: ‘We wanted to show our respect and admiration for Captain Tom and for Richmond to be a part of a national response to a remarkable achievement by a remarkable man.’
